Ontario Canada's Top
Secret Walleye Heaven!
By Dave Reed |
|
| |
| |
|
I’m about to
tell you
about a
walleye
fishing
experience
of a
lifetime!
How do I
know about
it? I have
been
fortunate
enough to
have
experienced
it for
myself
several
times and I
can tell you
without
hesitation
that after a
lifetime of
walleye
fishing
this
particular destination
is
definitely something
worth
keeping
a secret! Yes,
it is
available to
anyone
that's been fortunate
enough to
find it but
because of
its
limited
access and
very few lodging
facilities
the
lucky anglers
that know
about this
lake have
been keeping
it secret
for many
years. I
even know of
one national
fishing show
host that
films here
annually and
still
refuses
to even
divulge
on his show
exactly where it is!
Just imagine
a very large
lake in
Ontario that
has been
legally protected
from over
development
by the
Ontario
government.
Also
imagine a
lake with
over 400
miles of
shoreline
and
absolutely no
access by road
to its few
lodges. Nope,
it’s not a
fly in lake
either. In
fact, the
few lodges
that are on this lake
have
comfortable first class
lodging
packages
with well
maintained
boats, clean
cabins and
an American
meal plan
that is
actually so
good you'll
come back
just for the
food. |

To my
knowledge there are only five small lodges operating on this lake
with only three that I can personally recommend. The
Ontario Resources Ministry and the lodges themselves
strictly enforce conservation limits and have a rather wide
protected slot limit from 17 inches to 24 inches. Because of
this slot over fishing is
unlikely to ever be a problem here. If you want to take meat
home, this is probably not the lake for you. But if your
goal is to catch lots of walleye and have the opportunity
for the largest walleye in your lifetime this vacation spot can be a
dream come true. I have seen many walleye over 25 inches
caught every week that I have fished there and giant walleye over 30 inch
are not uncommon. There is no such thing as a
guarantee in fishing but this place sure comes close. In
2007 I took out one angler for three hours and we caught my
current record of 63 walleye in a single evening.
The lake
itself is very large with two distinctly different ends. One
end is a bit shallower and protected while the other end
tends to be a lot more open with deeper waters. The shallowest east end
is known for its tremendous numbers of walleye while the
deeper end has a reputation for more consistently producing
the most trophy fish. The amazing thing about this lake is that
it is very common to fish all day at either end and rarely
see another fishing boat. |

During this
excursion you
definitely will be able to see pristine northern scenery and wildlife worth
bringing along your camera to photograph. Bear sightings are not uncommon and
moose are often standing in the back bays. Bald and
Golden Eagles soar over the water searching for a quick
meal. Many hundreds of Loons use this lake to raise
their young. Hummingbirds are everywhere and will often
hover around any angler that is wearing a bright red or yellow
jacket. The overwhelming beauty of this location can
actually be almost too distracting to a die hard angler. The
water is so clean that many people simple take a cup instead
of water bottles.
Walleye
are not the only species available here. Smallmouth bass and
northern pike are also abundant during certain seasons but
are rarely ever targeted because of the popularity of the
walleye in this lake. Other species available include perch, lake
trout, suckers, and brook trout. I have also caught several
of the very rare blue walleye. |

Just how
many walleye could you expect to catch per day? I have seen
"inexperienced" anglers fish come here that never catch a walleye in
three days of hard fishing and maybe only a couple in a full week
of fishing! This lake is very large and it would take two
lifetimes to ever fish all the different areas. Also remember
there are very few anglers at any given time on this lake. While
you are fishing here
you won’t be able to find large groups of boats sitting on a hot
spots and then join in. Another problem is dealing with safe navigation.
Bringing your own boat is not recommended to newcomers
because this lake has a tremendous number of "invisible"
massive rocks laying
just below the surface in just about every part of the lake.
Many a visitor’s lower units have been torn off here on
their first day. One lodge
owner recently told me in a conversation that losing only 25 lower units a season would
be a good year for him!
I guess that
I got
off track so let's get back
to the original question about how many walleye you might
expect to catch. Many times I have
located such massive schools that I
caught walleye all day every day! Although this isn’t normal
or easy to do, it is indicative of the fact that catching twenty
or thirty walleye per day can be very normal and I even expect
that and more daily.

Now I have a
question for you. Have you
been searching for your dream walleye fishing excursion of a
lifetime? I can make that available to a few eager
and enthusiastic walleye anglers
in 2010 with my custom guided walleye excursions. Your dream walleye trip will
include everything including boat, motor, guide, bait, lures,
extremely modern and clean
accommodations with inside shower (hot and cold water),
two hearty chef prepared meals per day, packed lunch or
shore lunch, all
non-alcoholic drinks plus a fishing experience beyond your expectations. I
prefer one or two anglers but I can also handle three
anglers by taking one angler in my boat and the other
two anglers following us and staying nearby.
With this
complete package you will
only need to get to our meeting location with
your clothing
and your personal items. You are welcome to bring your own
rods and reels if you prefer or you can simply request me to bring rods and reels
for you. Please note, I will not guide for anyone that needs
to bring along beer, alcohol or cigarettes so please don’t
ask. After you are scheduled I will be providing you with a pre-trip checklist so
that you can be 100% prepared. I will point out the
things you will need to consider like having a passport and an Ontario
fishing license. |

Transportation: These weekly trips
run from your arrival at a pre-determined nearby location Saturday
morning through your leaving early the next Saturday morning. I will
not disclose this lake's exact location ahead of time
so please don't even ask. We will meet somewhere near
North Bay, Ontario and I will then personally lead you to a
location where you can park your car in a guarded fenced in
parking lot. If
you want to fly in instead of driving, I can pick you up at the North
Bay airport or I can also arrange a fly-in for you directly to the lodge.
Note: Once you have been to
the lodge and
learned the lake and the methods you will always be able to
come back again and again either with me or on your own if you
prefer. Why all the secrecy? Because once you have had an
opportunity to experience this ultimate fishing dream you
will yourself want to keep this place your little secret
too.
This
walleye
dream trip is
all inclusive with everything that you will need already
provided and runs $2400 per week. Any additional anglers
are $1500 per week. If you have
questions please email me and I’ll do my best to help
get everything arranged to your convenience. Accommodations
are some of the absolute best that you can find in Canada anywhere. We will
attempt to have separate cabins for every two guests
whenever available.
